The Bullet  Operation

The Bullet Operation

Two discs operate in front of a press wheel.  The discs gather in the soil, cutting grooves into which seed is placed using specially designed boots.  The press wheels following close the grooves and expel the air from the seed zone.  The amount of disturbance depends upon the conditions.  Dry, friable soils will be disturbed virtually completely between the discs whilst with moist black soils, the disturbance can be minimal.  The soil on the alternate row is virtually undisturbed.

The discs, press wheels and boots are mounted on modules across the bar. The modules pivot at the front of the machine and are connected to the rear of the machine by hydraulic rams.  The planting depth is the distance between the bottom of the disc and the bottom of the press wheel.  The extension or retraction of these module rams control the planting depth.  These hydraulic rams also retract or extend as the modules glide over contours.  Note:  with this system, the depth can be adjusted from the tractor cab.

Generally, the transport wheels are retracted out of the ground in operation but can be lowered in soft conditions or when less pressure is required on the press wheels. Note:  with this system, the press wheel pressure can be adjusted from the tractor cab.

A pressure gauge is an option to indicate the amount of pressure on the press wheels.

Safety sensors do not allow folding of the machine when the discs are engaged in the ground.

Scrapers

The scraper blades are made from hardened and tempered spring steel, a material called crinoline.  This material has a Rockwell hardness of 45-48 and is the same material used in band saw blades to cut steel.  Their hardness allows us to use a thin blade which makes it very efficient as it will peel the soil from the disc rather than bulldozing the soil off as with most blade scrapers.  An adjustable torsion spring (below) allows us to vary the scraping pressure from virtually nothing for light soils to max pressure for peeling black sticky soils from the disc.
