Industry and Investment, NSW trials at its Trangie Agricultural Research Centre have demonstrated that wheat and barley growers who plant crops late are likely to have their profits slashed, with returns reduced each planting is delayed.
A report on the trials quantifies the losses at $22.75 per hectare per week. Rohan Brill, Industry and Investment’s agronomist says, “Put in context, if a grower sows 1000ha of wheat, and on average the crop goes in the ground two weeks late, the loss in income would be $45,000”.
